High Sierra Drum and Dance Gathering Sept 26th and 27th

Welcome
We’re having a drum gathering in the North Lake Tahoe Area at the lovely Clair Tappaan Lodge will happen Sat Sept 26th and Sun 27th, 2009.
The gathering is intended for those interested in the music and dance of West Africa and to grow together as a community; musically, spiritually, and playfully!

General Info:
Clair Tappaan Lodge is a rustic lodge located near the famous Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in the North Lake Tahoe area. See: Ctl.sierraclub.org for more details.
-Rooms in the lodge are available for $46 taxes included/night/per person. Please contact Clair Tappaan Lodge to reserve your spot for this event.
-Kids 4-13 yrs old are $20/night taxes included.
-Infants/toddlers 3yrs old or less are free
Day Passes: $20/adult includes a lunch ticket
-4-13 yr olds are $5 w/lunch
-3 yr or less are free
Classes are informal, and anyone is welcome to teach or participate.
**For those staying at the Lodge three meals a day will be offered w/a vegetarian option.

Here are some ground rules:

-No private fires.
-Park your car in parking area when not unloading.
-Dogs are allowed on grounds not in building. Owners are responsible for dogs. Please no problem dogs.

What to Bring
Camping gear (unless paying for a bed in the lodge), bowl and spoon, snacks, flashlight, drums, toys (juggling clubs, hoops, or whatever else you fancy).
Clothes for all weather. It will likely be quite hot during the day, but can cool off at night. September in the High Sierras tends to have warm, clear days with colder evenings so bring some shorts and also warm weather clothes.

Workshops
Both morning and afternoon there will be drum and dance workshops in the back yard and in the building- probably after dinner, too! Drum classes can also be arranged at all times in different clearings and rooms. Classes often happen spontaneously, so don’t be shy to ask if you want to learn. Workshops will be posted at the information center within the lodge.

Volunteers
This is your gathering. If staying in the lodge please contribute your energy by volunteering for at least one shift of: kitchen help, clean-up. Please come early or stay late to help set up/clean up if you can!
We’ll have a sign-up sheet posted at the information station to help organize volunteer efforts.

Dinner Circle
There will be a dinner circle every evening. This is our moment to gather as a community and communicate about our needs and offer our blessings, so please come.

Getting There

I am looking for a nice hardwood african djembe in about the five hundred dollar range.
I have traditional hawaiin shell leis (necklaces) for trade. These necklaces are made out of one of the rarest shells in the world. Kahelelanis. Kahelelani means "The pathway to heaven" . Back in the day these necklaces were made for only the king and queen of hawaii, when they passed from this life to the next. hence "The pathway to heaven" Today they are still made by the local kauain and niihaun families. I was blessed enough to learn how to make them in kauai. They are the only shell in the world considered a gem.
There are anywhere from 5 to 3000 shells on each necklace depending on the style. The prices ranges are from 100 to 1000 dollars for the ones that i make. You can check them out on my tribe photos. I am willing to trade a double strand rope for a nice djembe.
Thank you

I prefer something tribal or cultural, but if it sounds good that's probably the most important thing.. I've heard of some peeps having smaller african drums with great sound. Trouble is, I wouldn't know where to look in the Bay area. At this time I have a Remo Djembe which is ok, but I don't like how it sits. It'd probably be better if I had a stand for it, as it slips from between my legs when I'm playing it. Would like an easy-to-hold drum. All recommendations are greatly appreciated! Wouldn't mind a Dumbek but, am looking for something different.
2nd ANNUAL SACRED FIRE CIRCLE ALCHEMY
ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Start: 11pm Wednesday, 8/30
Conclusion: Sunrise, Thursday 8/31

Since the dawn of time, human beings have gathered
around the fire to drum, sing, trance dance and to
weave magic in the light of fire. This year's BM theme
of "The Future: Hope and Fear", offers each of us the
opportunity to powerfully invoke our hopes for the
future and to cast our fears and those beliefs that do
not serve us into this alchemical fire.

We use the word Sacred in the title of this Experience
to infer deep, deep levels of gratitude and respect for each
other, for ourselves and for life. You are encouraged
to explore, maintain and/or cultivate whatever
worldviews work for you, so long as they are mutually
respectful of everyone in the circle.

We will provide this sacred space in the same general
Playa locations last year's all-night Sacred Fire Circle -
approximately 300 yards to the Southeast of the spine
(visualize 2 o‚clock on the dial), a few minutes
bicycle ride beyond the Temple).

Please bring:
drums/percussion instruments (we will have a lockable
trailer at the Circle on Wednesday so as to facilitate
early delivery of drums), warm clothes and enough
water and food to keep yourself nourished. The Sacred

I want full-moon bonfires, public circles, dancing, costumes, all kinds of cool stuff.
Musician reportedly had contact with natural anthrax sources

Wednesday, February 22, 2006; Posted: 6:15 p.m. EST (23:15 GMT)

(CNN) -- A New York musician has tested positive for anthrax that authorities say came from unprocessed animal skins used to make traditional African instruments.

He is in stable condition at a Pennsylvania hospital, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

"The man poses no public health threat of transmitting anthrax to the community or the health care providers caring for him," the department said in a statement. (What is anthrax?)

The 44-year-old man recently traveled to Africa, where he bought animal hides and took them back to New York City to make drums, the department said.

The man, who plays native African music, complained of flu-like symptoms before collapsing last week at the end of the Kotchegna Dance Company show at Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, sources said.

The department said he was taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, about 50 miles northeast of Mansfield.

Blood tests were taken Friday, and on Tuesday the tests detected anthrax bacteria in the man's system, according to the state health department.

"At this time, there is no indication that the exposure was from an intentional release of anthrax," according to a release from the department. "The patient has a history of contact with unprocessed animal hides and recently traveled to Africa, where he purchased unprocessed hides."

It adds, "Unprocessed animal hides can be a source of anthrax spores."

Anthrax bacteria lie dormant in tough cells called spores until conditions are favorable for them to infect animals or humans.

New York City and federal authorities discussed the case at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, where they assured the public that the incident does not pose a health threat. (Watch Mayor Michael Bloomberg explain how the case is an isolated one -- 3:27)

The FBI and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are assisting local authorities in the investigation.

It includes an assessment of the patient's home and workspace in Brooklyn. Authorities also are trying to find anyone who might have had contact with the hides as well as members of the dance company, who are all from New York City, according to the state health department news release.

Learn West African Djembe and Dunun/ “djun-djun” drumming from Amadou Camara, a source musician from Guinea. Class is every Sunday morning from 11-12:30pm at La Pena Cultural Center. 3105 Shattuck Ave in Berkeley. A 5 minute walk from the Ashby BART station. Past rhythms have included Mamaya, Djole, Yamama, and Dununba (Dunun gbe) The class is mixed levels with usually one person playing each of the three dun’s. (sangba, kenkeni, dununba) The cost is $15 dollars a session, pay as you go and if you have a tape recorder, bring it to class with your djembe and/or dunun.

The class is a gender-ballanced, supportive, multi-cultural learning environment with students from the local area who aspire to become better players. Most of the rhythms are in 6/8 or 12/8, but are broken down into individual parts.

Amadou Camara learn to play djembe from Famadou Konate, who lives next to his family house in Guinea. Konate is recognized as one of the masters in the djembe / dunun tradition. Amadou Camara performed with Ballet Djoliba in Europe, Asia and Africa. A versatile musician, he also plays guitar and sings. He played djembe and dunun for many dance camps organized by master dancers in the United States, Europe and Guinea. This is a great opportunity to learn West African instruments from someone who comes from the source country. We are blessed to live in the bay area.

Ancient forms of group trance drumming and dancing have been practiced all over the world ever since the beginning of time, and they serve a far deeper function than just providing a good time in the moment. It is now widely recognized that there are deep biological, chemical and hormonal effects that can lead to radical changes of emotional, physical and psychological states of being within the participants, and have extremely life altering results. States of elation, disconnection from Time, stress relief, expanded Unified Field Awareness, connection with the Divine, and healing are regularly reported. Once the domain of only shamans and esoteric initiates, many modern-day ritualists and musicians are now working to induce this state within themselves and their co-participants. When you combine these radical physiological effects with the subtler but more potent factors of conscious focused intention, devotional yearning and coherent emotion, you go beyond pleasure and therapeutic benefit and into the shamanic terrain of authentic Transformation.

"TRANCE DRUMMING" will be taught in a Group Class-Workshop style format.

There will be specific instruction on basic technique, care and tuning, proper breathing, posture and the optimum natural body positioning for ease and endurance, holding & hand positions for healthy playing, hand and finger strokes, how to get the best sounds out of your particular drum, a blend of world beat
rhythm patterns from India, the Middle East and Africa, and the core foundation for understanding and manifesting "Trance Rhythm" in a way that is accessible and joyous, without years of time consuming and expensive training. The class is appropriate for all levels, from relative beginners to those who want to fine-tune their playing and learn to journey and communicate musically and spiritually in the mystical realm of Trance
Drumming. It is also appropriate for members of the Yoga, Healing and Transpersonal counseling communities who wish to learn Theta-state,Trance and Pulse Matrix Entrainment techniques
that they can share with others for therapeutic and holistic
benefit.

You Must BRING YOUR OWN DRUM -- drums will not be supplied. Your drum becomes your very own Vibrational Power Vessel. If you only have a "temporary" drum and need advise in what and where to buy the right drum for you, I will be glad to help. Also bring plenty of Drinking Water.

A fire arts and hand drummers gathering.
This is not a 'festival' nor is it a BurningMan sponsored event.
This is just a casual fun weekend where we can meet new and reunite with old friends of the fire arts and drumming community.
For those who haven't yet experienced RW&B, it's a beautiful secluded beach with camping amenities near Santa Cruz that is fire friendly.
We hope to have a DJ 'part' of the time but RW&B is under new management & we're still feelin things out.
Although we'll certainly be dancing and playing with our friends, please be aware that this is NOT A RAVE or dance party.
This is an amazing place and it's extremely important for all of us that we have absolute respect for what is a very rare fire friendly place.
Please DO NOT FORWARD this to lists out side 'our' community.
Please DO forward this to our fire friends and drummers and we'll see you mid April for a very special weekend.

Mohamed Diaby is teaching a mixed level (all levels) Djembe and Dunun class at
La Pena Cultural Center Sunday mornings from 11am-12:30PM He teaches the 3 dunun style of playing, where each dunun is played by one person with a stick and bell. Most of the class plays djembe. The cost is $15 dollars a session, and the class is a supportive multi-cultural, gender balanced class.(actually a lot more women some days) Its on a drop in basis, pay as you go. Its free to drop by and observe, and occasionally there is an extra drum (come early) if you want to take the class. Group lessons are good because you can meet others in the area that share your passion and who are serious about progressing musically in the West African tradition.
Past rhythms have included Konkoba, Djole, Mamaya, Liberte and Yokui.

Mohamed is a source musician from Guinea and has been teaching for 7 years in the US. He brings a deep understanding of the history, dances and songs of the rhythms that he teaches. He breaks down complex poly-rhythms into easily digestable pieces, and is a patient teacher. Mohamed was first taught by his older brother Moustapha at age 7. He later joined Africa Djole, then Les Merveilles De Guinea and later Ballet Africans. These are all professional level W. African drum and dance troupes.

Mohamed also has Drum and Dance workshops in Guinea From March 10- April 1st, 2005. for info (510) 213-0922 or Gabriel@Numujeli.com or www.Numujeli.com for more info on the Africa trip.
djembedunun.tribe.net

it will be heavy on bay area events in the west African tradition.

I play primarily Congolese rhythms but I also have a background in some West African. I've tried Afro-Cuban and although I love it, I found it pretty difficult... but I think it's because I'm so use to hearing nuances in the African stuff that trying to think off the clave is taxing to my brain.
